Echinocereus 2017: Korrektur und Typisierung der innergenerischen Namen und Rangstufen Teil 2 Wolfgang Blum Exkurs in die Feinheiten der taxonomischen Nomenklatur bezüglich Triglochidiatus Als sehr schwierig erwies es sich, die richtige Namensendung für das Subgenus Triglochidiatus zu finden. Als Echinocereus sect. Triglochidiata von BRAVO (1973, 108- 109) veröffentlicht und im RPS XXIV (G.D. ROWLEY & L.E. NEWTON: 1973, 9) für gültig befunden. Im RPS XXXVI (U. EGGLI & N. P. TAYLOR: 1985, 6) wird die neue Echinocereus subser. Triglochidiati Kunzmann in KuaS 36(4): 76 (1985) gelistet; Basionym: Echinocereus sect. Bravo selbst korrigiert (1991, 8 & 20) in Echinocereus sect. Triglochidiati. In CSI 7 (1999, 28) wird von N. P. TAYLOR wie folgt zitiert: Echinocereus subg. Triglochidiatus und Echinocereus sect. Triglochidiatus. IPNI verwendet auf seiner Internetseite „Triglochidiata“. Von den bedankten Nomenklatur-Spezialisten haben sich zur korrekten Endung für dieses Problem die folgenden geäußert: R. Govaerts (per E-Mail): “Dear Wolfgang, if published as „Triglochidiata“, then that should be kept as it is not to be corrected. Best wishes, Rafaël” V. Demoulin (per E-Mail): “Dear Mr. Blum, … Echinocereus “Triglochidiata”. I do not see how this is compatible with 21.2 but to me triglochidiata is more of an adjective. 21.2 nonetheless is a problem for me but a priori I would use Triglochidiati. […] Prof. hon. V. Demoulin” R. Mottram (per E-Mail): “Wolfgang, … Echinocereus Triglochidiata. It is the form of a genus, but does not agree in gender with the name of the genus. Subgenera & sections are preferably nouns (Art. 21B.2) but plural adjectives are allowed. BRAVO (1973, 108-109) used Triglochidiata as a section name, so I suppose technically you should stick with that form as a subgenus, too, but it is not very elegant. It ought to be Triglochidiatus, the substantive name in the nominative. Although the rules say it allows a plural adjective for sections and subgenera, I have never ever seen it happen in reality. They have always been nouns in the form of a genus in my experience, i.e. Triglochidiatus in this case. Your Triglochidiat- is a section, where Rec. 21B.2 says that it is preferably a noun. Art. 21.2 says that it can be of the same form as a generic name (i.e. Triglochidiatus [masculine] or Triglochidiata [feminine]), or a noun in the genitive plural (i.e. Triglochidiatorum). In this case, the earliest author, BRAVO (1991, 8 & 20), chose to use Triglochidiati, which is in either the nominative plural or genitive singular (both forbidden by Art. 21.2) or a plural adjective (allowed). The word triglochiatus (-a, -um) is itself an adjective, so BRAVO’s choice of Triglochidiati is available under the rules as a plural adjective (despite not being preferred), but must be followed as it is an available choice and she was the earliest to name it. So Triglochidiati it is. As a section it is fine. As a subgenus I’ve never known anyone to use anything other than a noun in the form of a genus, and in fact when you look at Art. 32.2 it explicitly says that a subgenus must always be a noun in the form of a genus, stating Art. 21.2 as the authority. Art. 21.2 does not actually say that (a contradiction in the rules), but if we follow Art. 32.2 which is always what is done in practice, then subg. Triglochidiatus should have been the correct noun because Triglochidiatus is itself an adjective. However, as you have already published it as Triglochidiati, we are then obliged to treat it as an adjective used as a noun and correct your termination to Triglochidiatus to convert it into a singular noun, i.e. use subgenus Triglochidiatus. […] Roy” “Wolfgang, BRAVO made an error with sect. Triglochidiata in 1973, but corrected it herself to sect. Triglochidiati in 1991. The following is correct: Echinocereus subg. Triglochidiatus (Bravo) W. Blum, Mich. Lange & Rutow, Echinocereus Monogr. (W. BLUM et al.) (1). (3. April) 1998. [„Triglochidiati“]. (noun in the singular agreeing with Echinocereus). Echinocereus sect. Triglochidiati Bravo, Cact. Suc. Mex. 18(4): 109. 1973 [„Triglochidiata“] (noun in the plural) Triglochidiata can be a noun, but it is the wrong gender – it must agree with Echinocereus. [...] Roy” Chronologische Kurzübersicht zur Namensentwicklung: Ich entspreche hier den Änderungen gemäß ICN Art. 32.2 & 21.2 sowie der Empfehlung 21 B.2 (vgl. Roy Mottram’s E-Mail). IPNI folgend wurden in den ersten beiden Teilen der aktuellen Triglochidiatus- Monografie (Die triglochidiatus- Gruppe und Die scheeri-Gruppe) leider noch die nicht korrekten Endungen verwendet. Echinocereus subg. Triglochidiatus Mottram, 2017: 90 (10.02.2017): „The lectotype designation Cereus fendleri Engelmann, selected by BACKEBERG in Jahrbücher der Deutschen Kakteengesellschaft e.V. 1941(2): 44 and Cereus stramineus Engelmann, selected by KUNZMANN in Kakteen und andere Sukkulenten 36(4): 77. (Apr) 1985, were not elements included (Art. 7.7) by SALMDYCK and are therefore not eligible. This taxon therefore remains untypified.” Übersetzung ins Deutsche Die Lectotypus-Bezeichnung Cereus fendleri Engelmann, Ausgewählt von BACKEBERG in Jahrbücher der Deutschen Kakteengesellschaft 1941(2): 44 und Cereus stramineus Engelmann, ausgewählt von KUNZMANN in KuaS 36(4): 77 (1985), waren keine Elemente (Art. 7.7) bei SALMDYCK und sind daher ungeeignet.
